Check out the brand new beta of wordTube 2.0.
It supports now the JW Media Player 4.0 !

DeutschThis is my plugin wordTube - A WordPress Media Center plugin.

After I get some programming experience with wp-Table I need another easy plugin for my clients. They want to show there own video in the style of Google video or youTube. Again I found serveral plugins (Like WP-FLV) which handle this already , but really not in a easy integration (or I’m to stupid to google for it). Anyway I’m motivated to do it in my own way and learn more usefull things.

How it works in WordPress

Here is a playlist demonstration of several media files. wordTube supports now the streaming video format (Format .flv or .swf), sound files as MP3 and JPG, GIF or PNG grafic files. With wordTube you can simply insert it into your blog with the tag [MEDIA=ID] or as playlist [MYPLAYLIST=ID].

Get the Flash Player to see the wordTube Media Player.

Example for the standalone MP3 player

Get the Flash Player to see the wordTube Media Player.

You don’t need to change the WYSIWYG mode or special HTML knowledge to insert such a tag. You can show a simple media file (i.e. a flv Format) or a playlist of all your media files. And I integrate in the header the SWFobject script to prevent the annoying “click here to activate” message when you use the Flash player.

How to you encode a Flash video

You can use the Marcomedia (or now Adobe) Flash Video Encoder (included in the Stanard installation) or a free version from the RIVA FLV Encoder. It’s really easy to encode your mpeg, avi or whatever to a flash video (the FLV format)…

Installation of this plugin

wordtube-folderUnpack the zip file and upload the folder into the WordPress plugins folder. Note : Do not change the folder names (See picture left side). You need also the free (for personal use) JW Media Player from Jeroen Wijering. Download the player from the website and upload it (only mediaplayer.swf) also into the wordtube folder. Now you can activate the plugin.

Note : Make sure you have the following in your template! (It’s in the original WP index.php template, but if you’re creating your own, you may have forgotten to include it) :

<?php wp_head(); ?>

That line would go in between your <HEAD> </HEAD> tags

Admin Menu in WordPress

Selection Settings

You can upload your files via the Manage->Media Center Upload form or you select the URL to the file, the file you want to play didn’t need to be placed on your server. Note for streaming videos : The Flash player will not show direct a preview, therefore you need also to upload a image (thumbnail) file. After uploading you can insert the tag [MEDIA=ID] or you show a playlist with the tag [MYPLAYLIST=ID].

Just upload the .mo file in the wordTube folder. WordPress will automatically load the language file from this directory, where ‘locale’ is the value you defined in your wp-config.php file in the root of your WordPress installation.

Important note for updating

Please deactivate and activate one time the plugin. The database structure has changed. Download the latest version from the Flash MEDIA Player. Then you are able to use other media formats than the FLV.

One note on the XHTML validity: if you use javascript (UFO/SWFOBJECT) to include the player, you’ll see you cannot get past using the single & symbol. It’ll break XHTML validity, but by placing CDATA tags inside the javascript this is restored. Have a look at the source code of my website’s pages that include a flash file!

    Thanks Jeroen for the hint,

I wil include the CDATA tags in the next version…

Thanks again for your great flash player !

Try to ignore for the moment the video_id button, I will check that later. Insert the video code direct into your post : [VIDEO=ID]. This should then work…

    Hello Alex,

Guten Tag. Thanks for this cool plugin. It’s very easy to configure and took me less than 30 min. to get it up running on my site. I really like your slick designs of the video player’s controls.

Would it be possible if you can include a stop button in the next release of wordTube? Also, it looks like that I can only see the thumbnail images of the videos and/or background/button/active color changes in the Preview section but not in the actual videos I posted. Am I missing something in my configurations?

    Danke wieder,

    Alex,

Sorry. Please ignore my first question. The stop button is already in wordTube: It’s combined with the play button. Like the thumbnail image and color changes, it seems that the full screen button only appears in the Preview. Is there anything I need to change in my configurations?

    Thanks,

    Alex,
Great software — I was having problems with other plug-ins, but I love yours because it can show the image (still) and eliminates the double ckick to activate. Thanks!

One Question: When I was setting up and uploading Videos, I deleted a couple and now when I write a new post and use the “Insert Video” the drop down builds the [VIDEO=n] where n is 2 digits lower than the video I selected. I don’t have videos 1 and 2 in my list any more — so if I want 3, the command is building as 1.

Any way I can sync these up?

Regards and thanks again for a great plug-in
    Mike

    Ups Mike,

you are right, I need to correct this in my plugin.
It’s my mistake… I correct thatin the next release. Quick solution :

Edit file wordtube-button.php, Line 30 and replace this content :

    var thetext= ‘[VIDEO=’ + document.selectform.video.value + ‘]’;

    Alex,

Just saw your newly enhanced wordTube demo. That’s nicely done! It’s awesome that it can now handle formats like SWF, MP3, etc. as well as FLV. I’m looking forward to getting the new version of wordTube.

I’ve got the “Enable Full Screen” box checked under Options -> Video -> Flash Video Player Option, but still can’t get the full screen button appeared in the player. Here are the URLs:

    Alex,

Looking at the source of my page displaying the videos and comparing the following code segments with the ones from Mike’s page (BTW, Mike, it’s a nice video you made), I found several ‘#038;’ characters embedded inside values of FO. I saved my page locally as a HTML file, took those ‘#038;’ characters out, then, guess what, I was finally able to view my preview image on the video.

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

I forgot to mention that I was using Firefox 2.0 browser to play the Flash video and wasn’t able to see the preview images. When I used IE 6.0 browser, I was able to see those images ok.

  23. Gravatar Icon 23 alex.rabe GERMANY Posted January 1st, 2007 - 10:59 am

The problems is based on the Unicode char, the ampersand ‘&‘ will be shown as & #038; and Firefox didn’t understand that. I checked that now locally and also the HTML Code & amp; is not working in firefox.

Simply the flashvars (Like the Fullscreen option) behind the & will be cutoff.

    Reason :

The Ufo script I used caused this problem, so I change the script to SWFobjects.

    Solution :

I release in the next days a new version from wordTube.

Not sure if this is a bug or a configuration option (I am new to WordPress). When I get to a list of posts by linking on a specific category hyperlink, I will see the list of posts for that category. But instead of the video player box showing, I get some error text in it’s place: “Get the Flash Player to see this player.” You can see this on my site if you click on the say, “Silly” metadata link on the first post on the blog page.
Shouldn’t the plug-in fire for this list screen as well? Mike

p.s. Is this the proper place to report bugs?

    @Quang Minh
Try the repeat option, maybe this will switch to the next file

    @Mike
Happy new year to you ! Nice to see that the player is working.

The Seaach option is really a problem, cause the listing of article will cut off the Video script file and it remains a only the first part (which includes this message for all people which you normally only see when the Flash player isn’t installed).

Don’t know at the moment how to solve that…

Thanks for the great plugin. Everything seems to be working great, however, when I preview or publish my posts, I get the “Get the Flash Player to see this player.” message. I have all my flash players up to date, so don’t understand why I get this message. This happens in both IE and Firefox.

Thanks for making such a great plugin available. It has really simplified the process of embedding video in Wordpress.

I was wondering if there was a way you could only load swfobject.js on pages that include media? I know it isn’t very large but I have so many plugins loading javascripts into every page that it’s starting to add up and slow down my page loads.

I’m guessing it’s not possible because you have to output the loading of swfobject.js in the header before you know that it’s needed further down the page. If so, how about an option to turn off loading it for all pages for those of us who would like to manually include it only in the page templates that need it?

    Hey,

So far, I managed to install it locally on my XAMPP server, and the plugin seems to work great, except that when I click on Manage, and then Media Center, it’s complaining that the wordpress.wp_wordtube table doesn’t exist. So, I loaded up phpMyAdmin and added the wp_wordtube table to the wordpress database with 20 fields that I didn’t name. What do I do to fix this?

Normally WordTube install automatic the table in your database,
Did you get any error message when you activate the plugin ?

Check wordtube-install.php for the SQL command, when you would like to setup the table manually

Just wondering if you’ve seen the php Video converter (and upload in the example)?

    http://wcope.wordpress.com/2007/01/04/phpvideo-release-01-beta/

I am guessing that you might be able to integrate uploading of any video file and it will be converted on the server.

hi alex, thanks for replying. here is the path to the xml file: http://champcommunications.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wordtube/playlist.xml
wrong directory perhaps. please bear with me, i do not have a whole lot of programming exp!

  43. Gravatar Icon 43 alex.rabe Posted January 9th, 2007 - 2:52 pm

The playlist.xml file will not be used, the playlist generator creates the XML file via a PHP script automatic.

When I have a look at your video , I can see that the script didn’t generate a content.

Have you already added one or two video’s with wordtube as single flv files ?

  44. Gravatar Icon 44 alex.rabe Posted January 9th, 2007 - 2:56 pm

    @Upekshapriya

Very interesting. How do I integrate a video converter like FFMPEG on a server which is hosted by my provider. Should be the FFMPEG converter compiled together with PHP5 ?

  45. Gravatar Icon 45 chuck Posted January 9th, 2007 - 3:58 pm

yes, i added 2 through the media center, although it is the same file twice with a different title…

    Hi Chuck,

can you send me via Email a login to your Wordpress with admin rights ? I would like to find the reason for the behaviour…

I’m having the same issues as Chuck. Loaded two throuth media center. Still get “Wrongly formatted or empty XML file”.

  48. Gravatar Icon 48 alex.rabe GERMANY Posted January 9th, 2007 - 8:28 pm

    Yes, i got it !

My lookup for the playlist exclude option is wrong, I will fix that now.

  49. Gravatar Icon 49 The Gray Dog UNITED STATES Posted January 10th, 2007 - 4:08 am

Thanks for the fix. I was both surprised and thrilled that you responded so quickly. Works great now! Thank you.

My suggestion for a new feature would be to add a field to the wordtube table to allow for multiple playlsists. Perhaps a tage like {MYPLAYLIST=2] would be great.

Thankd again for your great effort. If you ecer need a beta tester, I’d be happy to assist.

Alex, I imagine you need to ask your server provider to install ffmpeg and tell you the application path.

  51. Gravatar Icon 51 Upekshapriya UNITED KINGDOM Posted January 10th, 2007 - 7:29 am

And it looks like you could use ffmpeg-php http://ffmpeg-php.sourceforge.net/index.php to extract a thumbnail from the flv video.

    Hi,

Using your plugin, which is excellent thanks! How do i change/modify some of the parameters that i think the flv player allows - ie background colour? My background is black on my site, so i would like to make the background of the player a lighter colour so you can see the player easier….Also, what is preventing having the first frame show up like youtube videos so u can see the start of the video without pressing play? If u can already do this, how do i set this up?

    thanks.

  55. Gravatar Icon 55 alex.rabe GERMANY Posted January 11th, 2007 - 9:28 pm

Flash background is set fix to transparent, you need to do that in the plugin-files direct, I will update this in a later release.

For a preview add a image / jpg of your video, the first frame can’t be shown automatic.

it’s not for this purpose. Google for Viper Video Quicktags,
it’s the best one for Google video and YouTube…

  59. Gravatar Icon 59 Gabriel Posted January 15th, 2007 - 11:01 pm

yes i know that, what i am asking is there any way to play youtube’s .flv file into my player ?

  60. Gravatar Icon 60 alex.rabe GERMANY Posted January 15th, 2007 - 11:15 pm

Let me says it in this words : it’s possible to implement a flv file from any webpage, you only need the path to the file.

So if you figure out a way to get the YouTube path , it should be possible…

    hey,

great plugin, but i´ve got a question.
i´m currently working at a site, where i want to publish lots of videos (i think about 250 videos). it is possible with this plugin, to store the videos in different folders automatically? for example one folder for one month?
or should it be no problem, when there are lots of videos listet in the media center?

    cheers

  64. Gravatar Icon 64 alex.rabe GERMANY Posted January 17th, 2007 - 7:08 pm

    Hi Antihero,

It’s no problem to use different folders and in my opinion also 250 files should be possible, but I must say I didn’t test it with so much files. A “automtic save in different folders” is for me at the moment no clear…

You can explain me your idea in the forums a little more in detail. Thanks

How do you change the order in list of songs?
After I insert a new media file, it always add the songs at the end of list
sometimes I would like to change its order in the list.
Or I would like the most new songs which I just update to the first item of list.
Can you offer that options to do this?

    Hi,
I just downloaded the plug in an it works perfectly with single videos, but the playlist doesn’t work. It is possible that is a reason of the new mediaplayer flash file (cause it’s now version 3.3.). Does anybody knows a thing about this, or still has the version 3.2 at their disk and can send it to me.

    mail: clemens [at] rette-deine-jugend.de

    Hello Clemens,

I must disappoint you, the Flah Player Version 3.3 causes no problems, I uplaoded now the new version and playlists are still working.

Please send me a link to your page via the forums. Thanks !

    Hi there,

    Great plug-in!!

When I go to upload it says just below the upload box: Note : The upload limit on your server is 2MByte though through FTP I have no upload limits. Is this limit done though Wordpress?

Also in manage it says ‘no table’ - is that because nothing is uploaded yet?

    Keep up the good work.

    Regards
    Karl

the site is on my name ^^

    Hello,

the swfobject script is not in the head section.
A problem could be that wp_head(); is not in your theme

    regards
    Alex

  75. Gravatar Icon 75 fanboy PORTUGAL Posted January 23rd, 2007 - 8:22 pm

that was it… thanks ^^ ohhh and great work

  76. Gravatar Icon 76 fanboy PORTUGAL Posted January 24th, 2007 - 2:10 pm

Sorry for the thrashing, but I’ve tried a couple of feed readers, and although it works fine on the site, the player won’t load on the feed readers (tried on google reader, my offline reader and … bloglines i think)… i guess because of the swfobject script, even though i do understand it’s use, i think the usability factor that it adds doesn’t compensate the added component (and complexity of the plugin) as well as versatility.

Since most people have flash, and people that don’t have it, most likely their browser will warn them and give them the choice to install it (firefox,ie 7 and opera already do it), so can you consider a version without it?, nevertheless thanks for all the hard work ^^.oO(and i will be adding a link back to you, on my site, sooner or later… hehehehe)

  77. Gravatar Icon 77 Gregg Posted January 24th, 2007 - 5:32 pm

    Hi Alex

Really great plugin …. I love the new ability to be able to have multiple playlists ..it is really far ahead of any other flv wordpress plugins.

There is one thing that I can’t seem to get right… how do I get a page with a playlist in to validate?

I followed jeroens suggestions about using the CDATA tags to preserve the xhtml validation and I fished around in the wordtube.php file until I found this bit of code

    $replace .= “\n\t”.”;
    $replace .= “\n\t”.’//’; // without the space I get a problem, caused by Wordpress
    $replace .= “\n\t”.”.”\n”;

And it looks like you have already used them but it still throws up around 10 validation errors…

I noticed its on your todo list and went to the “more” link but dont really understand if it is a fix or an issue that needs to be sorted out in wordpress.

Any guidance with this would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Gregg

    Hi,

    What a plugin. Awesome.

I had a question, is there a way to have playlists adapt to the various sizes. i have a couple of widescreen video, along with normal sized video and I would like them to play them in the same playlist.

Along the same lines, sometimes when I change the sizes it cuts off certain areas even though, i think, I have adjusted correctly.

    Thank you.
